Formula & methodology

How Hybrid Role & Hours Tip Pooling Works

In a hybrid percentage-and-hours tip pool, each role first receives its assigned share of the total tip pool, and employees within that role split their share by hours worked:

Role Tip Pool = Total Tips × (Role Percentage ÷ 100)
Employee Tip = Role Tip Pool × (Employee Hours ÷ Total Hours Worked in That Role)

Common questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Can managers or owners take tips from a tip pool?

No. Under U.S. FLSA regulations, employers, owners, and managers/supervisors may never keep any portion of an employee tip pool.

Can back-of-house kitchen staff be included in a tip pool?

Under federal FLSA rules, back-of-house cooks and dishwashers can participate in a mandatory tip pool if the employer pays all employees at least the full minimum wage without taking a tip credit.

What if two servers work different shift lengths?

Because hours are weighted within each role, a server who works 8 hours earns twice the role share of a server who works 4 hours.
