Formula & methodology

How to Reconcile a Cash Register Drawer

Denomination Subtotal = Face Value × Quantity Counted
Grand Total Cash = Bills Subtotal + Coins Subtotal
Net Bank Deposit = Grand Total Cash − Opening Register Float

Worked Example: Counting $710.00 in bills and $12.73 in coins gives $722.73 in the drawer. Subtracting a $200.00 opening float leaves $522.73 to drop in the safe for deposit.

Common questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Why should the opening float be subtracted from the cash count?

Your opening float is starting change capital that stays in the register for tomorrow's opening shift; only cash above the float represents today's net cash sales.

How do I spot cash drawer over/short variances?

Compare the Net Bank Deposit against your POS system's Expected Cash Sales report. Any difference over $2.00 should be logged on your closing checklist.

Can I print a cash count slip for the safe drop envelope?

Yes—click Print Z-Slip to print a clean summary sheet to include inside your daily deposit bag.
