Formula & methodology

How Selling Price with Platform & Payment Fees Is Calculated

Because marketplace commissions (e.g., 10%–30% delivery app fees) and credit card processing (2.9% + $0.30) scale with the final selling price, simply adding a percentage to COGS under-prices your product. The exact algebraic formula is:

Selling Price = (Item Cost + Shipping + Overhead + Fixed Fee) ÷ (1 − Fee % − Target Margin %)

Common questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between profit margin and markup?

Profit margin is profit divided by the selling price, whereas markup is profit divided by total cost. A 50% markup on a $20 cost ($30 price) equals a 33.3% profit margin.

Why do delivery apps and marketplaces erode margin so quickly?

A 25% delivery marketplace commission is taken off the gross selling price, not your food cost. Using this calculator ensures your price covers both COGS and the platform commission.

Should payment processing fees be included in Cost of Selling?

Yes. Standard card processing (2.9% + $0.30) comes straight out of your net margin on every transaction.
