Formula & methodology
How Customer Churn Rate Is Calculated
Customers Churned = (Starting Customers + New Customers Acquired) − Ending Customers Churn Rate (%) = (Customers Churned ÷ Starting Customers) × 100
Worked Example: Starting with 1,000 customers, acquiring 200 new ones, and ending the period with 1,150 means 50 customers churned: 50 ÷ 1,000 × 100 = 5.00% churn rate.
Common questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Why are new customers added before subtracting ending customers?
Because ending customer count includes the new customers you acquired during the period. Subtracting ending count from (Starting + New) isolates how many existing customers left.
What is a good monthly customer churn rate?
For recurring service contracts (lawn care, janitorial, pest control, meal subscriptions), a monthly churn rate under 3%–5% is considered strong.
Can this formula also measure employee turnover?
Yes! You can also use our dedicated Employee Turnover Rate & Replacement Cost Calculator to include recruiting and training replacement costs.
