Formula & methodology

How Asphalt Driveway Costs & Tonnage Are Calculated

Driveway Area (sq ft) = Length × Width
Asphalt Tonnage = [ Area × (Thickness in Inches ÷ 12) × 145 lbs/cu ft ] ÷ 2,000 lbs
Total Cost = (Area × Mix Rate × Thickness Multiplier) + Site Prep + Add-Ons

Common questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What thickness of asphalt is best for a driveway or parking lot?

Residential driveways typically use 2 to 3 inches of compacted hot-mix asphalt, whereas commercial parking lots and delivery truck lanes require 4 inches over a compacted crushed-stone base.

What is the difference between Hot Mix and Porous Asphalt?

Hot mix is the standard dense-graded paving material; porous asphalt allows stormwater to drain through the pavement into a stone recharge bed below.

How often should an asphalt driveway be sealcoated?

Apply protective sealcoating 6–12 months after initial installation and every 2–3 years thereafter to prevent UV oxidation and water intrusion.
